Living Heart and Dead Heart: A Discourse of Sufi Shaykh-Hoja Lokman Effendi (q.s)
More than one thousand years ago, some people went to the Friend of Allah, Hazrat Hasan al-Basri (ks). And they said to him, ‘Ya Shaykh,’ understand, this happened one thousand years ago, ‘Ya Shaykh, we do not know what is wrong with us.’ He asked them what they meant and they said: ‘Our hearts are not affected when you recite the Holy Quran and the Holy Hadith to us.’
Hz. Hasan al-Basri said to them, ‘If reading of the Holy Quran and the Hadith, they do not affect your hearts, do not say that your hearts are sleeping. Instead say that your hearts, they are dead. Even a sleeping person awakes when he is shaken up. If someone sleeping does not awaken when he is shaken, he is not asleep, he is dead.’ This was one thousand years ago. Everyone now is rushing and running to become hafiz, sending their children, bragging and boasting to the whole world that they are memorizing the Quran. But like what Holy Prophet (AS) is saying, the Quran does not pass our throats. We are not affected. And the Quran is disappearing, day by day. That is a sign of Ahir Zaman. That is a sign of Judgment Day. Not the physical Quran. The spirit of the Quran.
So if the Words of Allah (SWT) they are not affecting us, if the Words of Rasulallah they are not affecting us, if the words of the Evliyaullah they are not affecting us, then Hz. Hasan al-Basri is giving us the diagnosis of our condition- our hearts have become dead. And check yourself, what are you running for? What makes your heart to come alive? What wakes you up in the morning? What gets your mind and your heart to think and to look forward to the day, running for Allah or running again to the dunya? Believers and unbelievers. Muslims and non-Muslims. Jew, Christian and Muslims, murids and non-murids.
Check yourself. 21st century mankind, we have killed our heart, because we have lost the fear of Allah. The fear of Allah jala wa’ala makes the heart to be alive. Definitely the fear of death is making everyone to become alive. The fear to die, the fear to be sick is making every single one of us to run to this world and to pull more treasures and pleasures from this world, because we don’t want to be dead. But the fear of Allah, it is dead. Because the fear of Allah is what makes the heart to be alive. The love of the dunya is what makes the heart to be dead. The fear of Allah (SWT) makes a man to move. But when a man loses that fear and and he forgets his Lord, he is killing his heart. Holy Prophet (AS) is saying, ‘Do not laugh too much, because too much laughing kills the heart and takes away the light from your face.’
